DERRIN CRAMER

I grew up in a household where finding pins on the floor was a daily hazard, and I thought everyone had a stash of fabric, yarn, embroidery threads and textile projects on the go. I learned to stitch and sew and crochet at the knees of my mother, grandmothers and great aunts who all encouraged my textile pursuits alongside their own. After making clothes for my dolls when I was very young I’ve branched out to many more textile techniques over the years. These days I live on a rural property north of Bindoon with a large vegie garden and an even larger light and airy studio space, surrounded by birds and trees and nature. It is nature that provides much of my inspiration. My creative practice is broad and varied and at any given time I might be working on machine embroidery, quilting, dyeing using plants and leaves, printing, crocheting, dressmaking, making cyanotype images with plants, or upcycling used textiles into something new. Sometimes (often) many of these are on the go at once. So if you are looking for me and you can’t find me in my studio, I’m probably in my garden. Or building stone walls. Or planting trees for wildlife corridors. Like I said, my creative practice is broad and varied.
